The discussion turned to the Mosque being built near the site of where the World Trade Centre once was. Mr. O'R was telling everyone about a recent poll that suggests that 70% of Americans oppose the construction of the Mosque. Bill continued to say that Muslims attacked the towers - that's when all hell broke loose. I won't go into the yelling match that ensued, but I will say that of those 70% of Americans that Bill refers to - are ignorant Americans. The very constitution that makes the US what it is is quite explicit when it says that freedom of religion, (I may not agree with it - 70% of Americans don't seem to either), freedom to worship & freedom to own property is a right afforded to ALL Americans. So, to the 70% who don't like the idea of American ideals, get your laws changed or move away - cause you certainly haven't got a clue as to what being an American even means.

FMF

The Holy Book Burning

Again we see very sick religious people grabbing the headlines. Some preacher of a small congregation (about 50) in the USA is gonna have himself a book burning. The book of choice? The Muslim holy book is going to get barbecued. People from all around the world are denouncing this act of free speech. Not only can you have a belief in a nonsensical, non-human philosophy, you can also trash-talk other religious psychotics and their 'holy' books. Needless to say, the Muslims of the world are pissed and in a mood to reciprocate - except that they will not limit their hate to books.

This seems to be another case of Why Religion is Bad.

Pax

Proposition 8 bullshit

A lawyer for supporters of California's gay marriage ban argued Wednesday in a landmark federal trial that opposite-sex marriage ensures children have the benefits of being raised by biological parents.

Attorney Charles Cooper delivered his closing argument as the case challenging the constitutionality of voter-approved Proposition 8 resumed.

Cooper said societies around the world have always seen marriage as a way to keep children from being born out of wedlock.

"The historical record leaves no doubt, your honor, none whatsoever, that the central purpose of marriage in all societies at virtually all times is to channel procreative relationships into stable relationships to ensure that offspring that result from those relationships are raised in those stable relationships," Cooper said.

I can tell you this, This Cooper dude is out to lunch. For thousands of years, billions around the globe have been subjected to countless varieties of superstitious bullshit. I am referring to religion. In those thousands of years, many of those superstitious/religious folks have made huge headway in promoting their style of bullshit. This headway usually comes in a deluded notion that the world would be better off with their brand of nonsense. And how is this headway put into action? Fear. Then death to all that oppose. Throughout history, those that want control take it. Religious bullshit is control. It is thought control, money control, information control et cetera. Now lets take a look at any religious country in the world. Better yet, lets take a look at the US of A. You have a country that was started by a bunch of men who appear to be very mildly religious and bordering atheism. They start this country with a notion that we are all the same. Good so far. Add a few hundred years and US citizens are saying that the US founding fathers were religious and the US was built on christian ideals. There are laws in the states that are based on religious ideas - a blatant violation of the 1st amendment. The voice of the crazy christian minority is loud. The vast majority of government is christian. Now you can see where religious bullshit, fueled by some in the republican party, will be the constitutionalized undoing of the United States of America - not President Obama and his administration as is suggested by the average ignorant US citizen.

God help us all ;)

US Republicans: The voice of lunacy

A day doesn't go by that you don't hear about some republican making some sort of out-of-the-ass comment about taxes or healthcare. The title is what got my attention. Since when do morals always stay the same? It might have read "The Changing Canadian Morality".
Many parts of the article interested me, but I was especially intrigued at the Euthanasia section. It seems that it is against the law to give drugs to speed-up death of a terminally ill person, but legal to withdraw feeding tubes from "failing" patients. The question of doctor assisted euthanasia was answered by McQueen's Catholic Bioethics (Catholic bioethics? I guess that's as strange as studying theology). They urge all Canadians to live life well, until its "natural" end (italics by me). Asking Canadians to live well till its natural end? This coming from an organization that fights anything natural and instead formulates their world view on supernatural superstition.
What "The New Canadian Morality" has shown me, is that Canadians are becoming more concerned with rights than with doctrine. I just wish religious folks could understand personal rights.

FMF

Ozone and water

My ozone machine worked like a hot damn and so did the fish pump idea. Enough about the dumb-asses in the US House of Reps. I had such high expectations for Angels & Demons. Ron Howard did a great job at showing the world the enormous amount of wealth the Vatican is in possession of. Mr. Howard failed miserably, however, at developing the story about the battle between science and superstition. Angels and Demons was very similar to the Da Vinci Code. You have Robert Langdon running around with some pretty girl after some bad guy. That's the story, in both movies. Ron Howard had a real chance to show just how the Vatican has screwed much of the world, justifying their actons by saying that they do good work or that it's all in the name of god. Oh well, the book wasn't some piece of history. I just think Ron Howard could have done a greater job developing the rivalry between the science community and the Vatican church.

FMF

Palm T/X Crap

I've owned my Palm T/X for about a year. The unit performed well up until 4 months ago. The first problem i had was that the power button would not work. I would have to hit a button on my T/X just to turn it on and wait for the 2 min with no activity feature to turn it off. Now my screen is out of sync. If I press the wifi search button, the dialer opens. I searched youtube, only to find that the digitizer is the problem. As it turns out, thousands of other people have the same problems that I've had. It would seem that the Palm T/X is a piece of shit. Plain and simple.

You might think that Palm would be concerned, but just like big business - they'll ignore that fact that they made a piece of shit and hope that everyone's attention will be diverted when one of their new pieces of shit electronics comes out.

Needless to say, I will not be buying another Palm piece of shit again. In discussing some of the bullshit in the world with a couple of good fellas, I had the great fortune of discovering that I had a misunderstanding of altruism. I understood altruism to be like giving someone in need your last loaf of bread - because they were in need. Does that not leave you without bread? I can see sharing to be an option, but then that would be selfish to a degree wouldn't it? Could 'sharing' be construed as altruistic? In doing some research on altruism, I stumbled upon a site that gave an argument as to why altruistic behavior could be harmful (and the only reason I introduce the idea is so I can illustrate why the idea of good and bad isn't always as clear as we think it to be).

"On a flight I took the other day, I watched the stewardess give the usual five minute safety presentation, and for the first time stopped to think about the implications of some of her words, which I had heard hundreds of times before without noticing them.
In the event the cabin depressurizes, oxygen masks will automatically drop from the ceiling. The stewardess warned us to make sure we put our own masks on before attempting to help our seatmates with theirs. This is part of an FAA-approved script, from which they never depart in making these presentations.
I imagine that this warning is aimed at the following scenario. The cabin depressurizes and anyone without a mask will become unconscious in moments. Your seatmates are children or otherwise helpless. If you attempt to help them without securing your own mask first, you will pass out without succeeding and everyone will die or become incapacitated. If you put your own mask on, your seatmates may pass out but will revive as soon as you have placed their masks on their faces. Thus, your attempt to help them will only succeed if you help yourself first."
The Ethical Spectacle - Feb 1997 - www.spectacle.org

Do we not have to make sure that our needs are met first? Would it be bad to help ourselves first instead of our seatmates? I guess it all depends on the outcome?

FMF

Holy Shit! Really!

I can't believe this, I mean I can, but I can't for the sake of people who don't give a shit. What I'd like to discuss here has two parts.

Part 1
There once was a Roman Catholic official (British Bishop Richard Williamson) who denied the Holocaust happened. The Vatican excommunicated (got rid of) the wanker, but then decided to let him back. There were a lot of pissed off people! The Pope himself lambasted Holocaust deniers. WTF? You can SEE the hypocrisy? Now the Vatican want's this wanker to recant. Ratzinger is kidding right? I guess it's like going to confession and being absolved of your sins. "Father forgive me for I have sinned - I thought the holocaust was all bullshit and still believe it was bullshit, but I want my job back so I'll just say that it did happen O.K?"

What a load of pig crap! The wanker was on Swedish television just before the lifting of his excommunication was announced and said "there was not one Jew killed by the gas chambers" during World War II.

Need I say more?

Part 2
Still with me?
You have someone who believes that no Jew was killed by the gas chambers during WWII. Right? How about the photos? The Newsreels? Interviews with camp survivors? One would think that the evidence is overwhelming. Evidently not.

However...

You have the same fella who believes that there is a 'god'. This fells also believes there was a guy named jesus who was the son of god and god at the same time. He believes in the virtue of murder, rape, stealing, incest, talking snakes (this one is for you Bill), lying, living in the sky, rabbits chew cud, blah, blah, blah. He believes stories from people who can't get their stories straight and people who NEVER MET the person (jesus) they were writing about! No photos, no film, no real evidence. Just ancient, edited messed-up stories, fragments, planted 'evidence' and a shitload of wishful thinking! Look this one up for yourself, but Leo X is on record saying as saying: "It has served us well, this myth of Christ". Whether the pope was a lying jackass stooge for the Medici family, he was still chosen by god! A tad screwy don't ya think? You can think?

In closing I would like to throw these two quotes -

Two hands working can do more than a thousand clasped in prayer.

Not sure who came up with that one, but it's a oldie and a goodie!

"The Christian god can easily be pictured as virtually the same god as the many ancient gods of past civilizations. The Christian god is a three headed monster; cruel, vengeful and capricious. If one wishes to know more of this raging, three headed beast-like god, one only needs to look at the caliber of people who say they serve him. They are always of two classes: fools and hypocrites." - Thomas Jefferson

Thanks Thomas and thanks eveyone for reading my blog.

Peace,

FMF

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://gotadime.blogspot.com/2009/02/holy-shit-really.html' title='Holy Shit! Milk is a story about Harvey Milk. Harvey was the first 'openly gay' person to be elected to public office in the US of A. The movie, and the movement, take place in the late 70's - a time when homosexuals were getting a bum rap (no pun intended). To make a long story short - one of Harvey's fellow city Supervisors (Ex cop, Ex firefighter, heterosexual and religious fella), was pissed off one day and waltzed into the mayor's office and shot the mayor dead. Pathetic. I could come up with all sorts of words, but none is as pertinent - just like all the individuals caught up in this game of hatred - pathetic. Unfortunately, you have two groups that are rooted in an ancient battle of "who's the bigger retard". Sure they have hospitals, scientists, electricity, houses, cell phones and the like, but deep down inside there is very little sense of humanity - something that backwards-ass religious traditions know very little about. It has a few definitions. I will concentrate on the notion that ethics are knowing right from wrong. Religious folks tell atheists they do not have the ability to know the difference between right and wrong because they have no "guide" to tell them. There is no argument in that statement, but religious folks still use it. The guide that I am referring to is the old testament and the new testament - two religions for the price of one!
There is only one way to read the bible (the OT and the NT - the jewish and christian stuff), as it was translated. The word of god translated? Blasphemy!
Mary Magdalene is known as a young girl in some bibles and a prostitute in another. I do think that the difference is a little extreme. Come on sheeple, do you really think that the bible writings are anywhere near their original state? Who do you think EDITED the the two religions together? Why do you think the prophesies of the OT were fulfilled in the NT? Who chose what texts stayed and what were cut? Do yourself a favor. Try reading a few books related to the history of your religious writings, and you just may learn a thing or two about the "ethics" of it all.

FMF

To bad jehovah & jesus - Allah has the last word

Let there be light! Are there other alternatives to feminine pads? A safe alternative to pads? Here is a quote from an article I read about women in Uganda.

"urban poor were improvising with unhealthy materials such as banana fibers, grass, leaves, old newspapers, and pieces of cloth that did not provide reliable protection."

It seems there is a doctor out there that developed a safe, cheap pad for the poor folk.
Pads are expensive in Canada. For single moms or women hit with hard times, that means taking money from other things like food to buy pads.

I really thing that something should be done to help the Canadian "poor". I'm sure some sort of tax credit or other assistance scheme could be employed here.

The reason that I thought of this is because a lady friend of mine (who is having a tough time right now) finds that living is really tough on a single income. No Shit! So when she was at WalMart the other day buying pads, she started to cry. She really had no choice. It's like, get the pads or make a bloody mess everywhere. I'm sure she is not the first to fell like this.

If anyone reads this, consider what I'm suggesting here. Let's see if we can't figure something out here.

The quote cited was from the article:

Uganda's Makerere University technologists invent papyrus-based sanitary protection
http://hopebuilding.pbwiki.com/Affordable+menstrual+pads+keep+girls+in+school,+create+jobs

FMF

Congratulations Are In Order

Wow, I can't believe it! Firstly - In my few years on this earth, I have noticed the the vast majority of child care is provided by women. Why wouldn't the saint for kids be a woman? Oh yeah I forgot, women are nothing more than chattels. Secondly - It seems to me that some men in the christian church are the ones who molest boys - not care for them. Oh, shit! Maybe that's what a saint is! Maybe saints are supposed to be oppressive, cruel, molesting assholes. How is it that you can have democracy when many American's have such racially motivated hatred for one of the people running to be their president? I guess as long as you are a born-in-the-US-of-A kinda person, you have the right to run for president - but you do not have the right to win if you are black. It seems that anyone in the USA that is black is labeled a criminal, terrorist or un-christian. These are not the qualities of an American president. But what about democracy, freedom and all that other feelgood bullshit that the US is so famous for? Why is it that it only applies overseas and not at home? As my title implies, the US seems to be a country of a few too many wackos. It seems that these wackos are from a particular part of the US. Enough said. It is the freedom in the US that would allow anyone to be part of the The Democratic Lunacy Party. But, does freedom and democracy not require responsibility? Can we and should we really be able to say what we please without consequence? Watching those yahoos talk about Senator Obama in such a (racially motivated) hateful way (on youtube), makes me wonder if the US could ever have a REAL democratic election. BTW - a big SHAME ON YOU - Mr. McCain for allowing that racist bullshit to continue. Shame on you and your sidekick Sarah.

Yours, for a harmonious tomorrow

FMF

If this is religion - religion is sick

Hey all. Just some bullshit masquerading as "morality".
First, is a link to some religious fella who seems to think (like so many other twisted folks) that the bible has the "highest morality code". The site can be found at -

http://esoriano.wordpress.com/2008/09/10/the-bible-has-the-highest-morality-code/

The second item shows someone (a woman we're told) being stoned to death. The stoning is captured on a cell phone, judging by the crappy video. It can be seen at -

http://ballyblog.wordpress.com/2007/05/04/iraqis-stone-girl-to-death/ - note: this is not something christians would do.

Another story of high morals comes from the book of judges 19:22 (of the tanakh). The story is clearly a knock-off of the Genesis 19 story. I urge you to read about the two biblical stories and the apparent moral lesson, I really do. And if you need an explanation of the second tale, go to -

http://www.thebricktestament.com/judges/gang_rape_and_dismemberment/jg19_01.html

for a version I think anyone can understand.

The sad part of this exercise is that there are many out there who believe that being bad to other people - cause god said so - is moral (and if you want more examples, feel free to comment on this post).

I just wanted to give you a little taste (again) of the bible's "highest morality code" with some examples.

Pax,
FM

Suckers!

I just saw a video on CNN depicting a young man talking about how 'freedom is always worth the price' - as he walks away from the camera you see his prosthetic leg. He's making a reference to the fact that John McCain served to protect his country.
What I don't get is all this bullshit about all these people serving their country 'fighting for freedom' is some other country! I could see it if they were DEFENDING their freedom and liberty from others (within the borders of the U.S.), but they are going to some other country (usually when they are not wanted) and wreaking havok everywhere, forcing the U.S. brand of "democracy" - and they call this fighting for freedom? Give me a freakn' break.
Politicians are actually really smart. They know that most of the general public is dumb and complacent and this is how they are allowed to pull some of the craziest crap on everyone. We let them. What makes you - yeah YOU - think that you are any different than me? You eat, right? So do I! What a coincidence! I go to the crapper. What, so do you? You wear clothes? Me too. You sleep? Me too! It's kinda nice to have a roof over your head isn't it? I think so.

I could go on and on with our similarities, so what is the problem with people? The problem, as I see it, is an issue of "I'm better than you are" syndrome. One of the most difficult things that we do is not being able to keep our bigotries to ourselves. To put it another way would be to say that we just can't not say something about how someone is doing something "wrong" - usually when it's not even our business! Taking a position like this implies that you must know how to do things right. Aside from how you reach your moral conclusions, this is what I mean.

Keeping your nose (or opinions) out of others' issues, would/could reduce much of the tension on this big planet of ours. Bigotry is a crime against humanity. It devalues humanity, it disrespects the human mind.

Bigotry is a crime.

FMF

Riddle Me This

I have a few questions for you folks to ponder.

Question 1

If you had a 5 year old son/daughter that spoke to an imaginary friend, what would you think?

Question 2

If you had a 15 year old son/daughter that spoke to an imaginary friend, what would would you think?

Question 3

If you had a 25 year old son/daughter that spoke to an imaginary friend, what would you think?

Question 4

If you had a friend that spoke of an imaginary friend who's name was Jesus, what would you think?

Just curious.

FMF

If Your're Gonna Talk The Talk, Please Walk The Walk

I received a post on my funwall from a friend of mine. It's a picture depicting First Nations art and the sage words; Humility, Honesty, Truth, Bravery, Honesty, Respect & Love. In the post, my friend implies that these are "First Nations" virtues. Personally, I don't think it's a good idea to speak for a group of people. But, since my friend thinks these words are appropriate to this type of people, lets take a look. I lived in a town that had a high percentage of First nations people. Of all the drunks I saw on Front Street I would have to say that 95% were First Nations. Of the social services in town, I'd have to say that 80% are geared toward First Nations. The high suicide rate in the Northern communities is one of the highest in Canada. Public defecation and vagrancy are primarily a First nations problem. Doesn't sound so virtuous does it?

Let me be perfectly clear here, I am in no way saying that people with financial , social, mental or addiction problems are any less human than I am, but implying that these 7 "virtues" can be applied to all First Nations is not a true reflection of that society - or any society for that matter.

I believe that we should all try and emulate these 7 virtues - that would be a great start, but let's look at the misfortunates of society realistically. And remember, if you're going to talk the talk, do us all a favour and walk in your own shoes.

FMF

So what is so great about gawd?

1. God
a. A being conceived as the perfect, omnipotent, omniscient originator and ruler of the universe, the principal object of faith and worship in monotheistic religions.

The definition of god was taken by the Free Dictionary by Farlex. What a great service!

Anyhow...

This god is perfect? infallible? unable to make a mistake? This god is omnipotent - unlimited power? this god is omniscient - knowing everything? We shall see.

God chats with one of his right hand men on earth and tells him that he doesn't like the people of a couple of cities for they don't listen to his orders, so his solution is to kill them all. Then god proceeds to play a game with this Abraham fella. By the conversation between god and Abraham, it would seem that Abraham is making god see some "rationale". As for the rest of this little story, we now turn to a resident of one of those wicked cities. Lot was a very nice man for he listened to god. One day god sent a couple of his best looking male angles down to meet with Lot to have tea. Soon after Lot's guests arrived there was a clamor outside. It would seem that many of the town's homosexuals wanted a piece of Lot's guests. Lot would have no part of it but instead sent his two virgin daughters out into the mob as a token gesture of his hospitality. The story gets better when Lot gets jiggy with his two daughters, and not a word from this god fella. I would encourage anyone to read this old testament story, and decide weather this god character is all he's cracked up to be.

The bible reference is Genesis 18:19 with portions of this story found in the Koran.

Misuse of Taser?

The death of a Polish man at Vancouver International Airport has created quite a fury, both in Canada, and abroad. Robert Dziekanski, 40, of Pieszyce, Poland, arrived at the VIA and spent 10 hours waiting - appearantly waiting for his mother to meet him. Toward the end of his 10 hour wait, he began to act a little strange - by the accounts of onlookers. Airport security showed up and proceeded to notify the RCMP. What happened just before RCMP arrived, to the point when Mr. Dziekanski lay dead, was captured on video.

The video shows a very distressed man who was speaking a language that was not English. Three RCMP officers arrive, exchange a few words, proceed to encircle the man and ultimately taser him to the ground - not once but twice. Moments later, the man dies.

This is an unbiased view of the video tape of the death of Mr. Dziekanski. I would encourage you to view the video on YouTube and make your own observations.

The job of a law enforcement officer is a difficult one. They are faced with dangers everyday. Just like any job, there are rules regulating how the job is to be done. As with most jobs, personal safety is first and foremost, most things are secondary. Law enforcement personnel are given tools to help them do their jobs. These tools include, but are not restricted to: Pistol, mace, attack dogs, baton and taser.

Certain situations require a different 'tool'. It seems that the preferred 'tool' in the case of Mr.Dziekanski was the taser. I'm not an expert on the taser, but I do feel that it was extreme in this case. Mr. Dziekanski was visibly agitated and acting strangely, but not aggressive toward people. When three RCMP officers addressed him (in a language that he could not understand) it appears he did not seem to be a threat to the officers. It's not like he openly resisted or defied police orders - whatever they might have been. So why make such a quick decision to taser him? I'm not quite sure why 3 RCMP officers could not have 'jumped' him in order to subdue him. If they wanted to employ a 'hands-off' method, how about pepper spray? Here we have a man that gets off a plane, unarmed, so why is he thought of as being a threat requiring subduing from a taser? Why not wait to see if you can get a translator? Why not try...

The use of the taser appeared to be aggressive, and ultimately caused the death of a man who did not appear to be a threat. The 3 RCMP officers involved in this case should be held to account according to the laws by which they are governed. It would seem that many things went wrong on that day at the VIA, and I do anticipate positive changes within the law enforcement community that will minimize the chances of anyone else dying at the end of a taser.

Peace

A Day Out

Mom's Cape Breton Kitchen
So we started our day out having breakfast at Mom's Cape Breton Kitchen on Estevan Rd. in Nanaimo. We first arrived and tried to find a clean table. After our fifth table search, we had found a reasonably clean one. We ordered breakfast. One order of eggs over hard, bacon and white toast and one order of eggs over medium, bacon and white toast. The wait was your typical wait. The food arrived. The over hard eggs looked over done, but examination of the yolk showed otherwise. The over medium eggs were not too far from the over hard eggs. The toast wasn't hot, but the bacon and hash browns were alright - my wife did not like them. All I can say is that we felt that the breakfast was not all great - mediocre at best.

Alice's on Nichol
Now there is a place where you get value. You get service, you pay reasonably, and you get get a decent portion, the place is clean - and the food tastes good! What more do I have to say? The place may have the feel of a cafeteria, but is that really so bad? The two occasions that I've been there have been great. I like to see that effort gets rewarded.

How about Mrs. Riches?
I'm not quite sure who there interior designer is, but it looks like whomever it is likes the BC bud! Just kidding. The place is a cross of a tasteful junkyard, entertainment nostalgia and photo album. My wife and I had coffee and a piece of pie. Not really anything to talk about, so I'll let you know about the food when I actually have some! I'm looking forward to it! Oh - Mrs. Riches is also the site of the monthlt Philosopher's Cafe. The next meeting will be on October 22 - 2007 -from 7pm to 8pm. You can show up for dinner at 5pm. I'll probably show up, but I want to find out what the topic of discussion will be. I'll keep you all posted when I find out.

Till then,

FMF

Some Good Eats In Nanaimo

Hi all:

For any of you out there in the digital domain who are not familiar with this site, I do like to throw in the odd layman food critique. So, here I go...

A few Sundays ago, I had the pleasure of spending some of my time in downtown Nanaimo. The bunch of us stopped by a couple of cafe's, but the one stop that grabbed our attention was a little place called Pirate Chips. Aside from the place looking a little worse for wear, the food that we had was not too shabby. Since I was a kid, I've grown to dislike Cod fish, but the stuff i got at Pirate Chips was awesome! The chips/fries were really neet too! The breading on the fish is light and tasty and the chips/fries seemed double crunchy - really good all around. To finish our experience, we had a deep fried chocholate bar and some ice cream - great for the sweet tooth in some of us. The prices are reasonable, but the seating arrangements have a little to be desired - there is a small row of seats inside and a couple of spots outside. It would suit a take-out application just fine if it wasn't for the lack of parking. I still give Pirate Chips a good grade.

Cheers,

FMF

Open Letter To Theists Of Any Ilk

Hello All:

My title should read "Open Letter to Theists Who Think That They Need To Do god's Work On Earth". The one common attribute that is given to any "god" is that they are "all powerful". So why is it that all of you "faithful" are busy trying to take care of god's justice? Are you implying that he is NOT as powerful as you say? You say god created the universe, the stars, the earth and everything else, so, if he wanted to condemn a person (a puny little person) why are you doing it for him? I get a kick out of all you god loving yahoo's out there who think that you're doing god's work. If he is a powerful as you think/say - why do you intervene? What's even funnier is if something bad should happen to me you would say that "god is punishing you". There is nothing more stupid that a person could say or think something like that - but that is exactly the way so may theists think.

I could go on and on. You should have the idea by now, if not, you should probably watch some TV evangelist to make you feel all better.

The truth is that god was an invention of the human mind. Once again we see this 'religion of conevience' rear it's ugly head.

Oh, did u hear about Ratzingers 'official' (3 versions later) lecture - the one referencing comments made by an earlier pope regarding Isalm lecture? My wife and I checked out this little spot on the wharf called Troller's. It had some really nice creamy clam chowder, and some really awesome battered halibut. You get some tartar sauce and coleslaw & fries with your fish, unlike the British Bobby restaurant we went to where you have to ask for coleslaw and tartar sauce (for the same price). The atmosphere is fun and happening. I would have to say that you get value for your hard earned cash. The Garden was encircled by a very carefully planned colonnade and bisected with an awesome watercourse. In the middle of the garden is a mountain with a shrine on top. It is said that the shrines act as refuge for spirits that are looking for a place to rest. This garden acts as the scholar's private sanctuary. It is quite beautiful.

P.S. The tour is worth the $8.00 CAD

After the gardens, I hung-out at the library. This place is a work of art. Modeled after a roman coliseum, the library truly stands out as a tribute to the Roman Empire.

After the library I picked-up the dweebs at the Van Arts Institute, we dined at the Granville mall and pretty much called it a night after that.

Today (Friday), I dropped the n00bs at the school and headed to Chinatown again. I picked up one of the huge rice pickers hats - kinda like a sombrero, but different material and country:) Cherie will love it. Did I mention that I picked-up these awesome chopstick cheaters! Ha. Anyhow, took some more pics of Chinatown - one of the oldest in Canada. It's 2:00pm and I'm gonna sign off now.
I'll give you may comments of the week after I get off the ferry.

See ya for now,

FMF

Vancouver - Day 3

I sit here in Starbucks with this free wireless internet connection looking at all the different people that walk by. People of all colours, dress, language and I assume religion. What puzzles me most is - why do we get along? Now, I'm sure there are millions of other people all around the world that are "getting along", so what is it that keeps us from hauling off and smacking someone in the head? Is it morals, rituals, common sense (doesn't seem so common these days) or is it laws?

It goes back a long way. A really long way. Many people use the phrase "reason to live" or "purpose in life" to give our "reason" for existance some validity. In fact, our raison d'etre, or more specifically our motivation, is really quite simple. Survival - The ability to stay alive. We make this choice everyday. It also seems intrinsic that most of us prefer to be happy and sad. The fact that people realize aspects of thier existance - and how it affects others - proves that we CAN make a difference in this troubled world. It is quite evident that peoples of the world must be educated - educated with knowledge that is fact based and not merely here-say. This is one of the most important steps needed to open the doors to humanity's endless potential (until the meteor hits earth and decimates all life on the planet):)

Cheers,

FMF

In Vancouver - Day 1

Day 1
I'm in Vancouver takin' in the sights and sounds (and smells). Most of the time the creator, Brian Flemming, did a great job of informing the viewer on the likelihood that jesus probably didn't exist. He did however did get goofy in one particular instance. The interview with the recent principal of the christian school that he used to attend as a boy seemed to be a little of an ambush - but to Brian's defense I will say that there wasn't much the principal could have done to defend himself from Brian's questions - he couldn't have. I wish Brian could have taken some of his "tone" out of the questioning. All in all it was fantastic piece of work. I would like to see a series that takes a definitive look at the points that Brian raises. The comparative "hero pattern" and the disjointed NT work from Saul of Tarsus (Paul) just to name a couple.

My first impression of the documentary is that Brian follows some of the "jesus" research and reaches the same conclusion that many other have reached - That jesus probably did not exist as the NT portrays (that's my impression, not Brian's). Some of the quotes that Brian slides in his work are just what people need to see - that early fathers of the church didn't believe that jesus was a real person, but existed as part of the mythos of the time & place.

I would recommend this work to anyone interested in thinking for themselves.

Peace and Harmony,

Fernando M. I was staying with the daughter for awhile but my wife wanted to see/hear/smell the ocean - And i don't have a problem with that - so here we are. The apartments I designed will be ready when they're ready. I've got a project lined up that might make a few people some money, but that will have to wait till my wife and I are settled in a little better. I'm picking up a trailer/camper on tuesday. Asking was 9.5 and I picked it up for 7 plus 7% tax. It's in really nice shape. I'll start leveling off a place for it on Monday. It will be nice to be near the jobsite - about 30 feet!

Anyhow, things are fine and I'm still looking for some kind of real work.

Peace
/FMF

Moving On

I moved to Sioux Sioux Lookout back in 1994 to get a job at the Hudson Mill. I was living in Barrie and there was no work, so I moved. Boy was I in for a shock! Nothing open past 6pm (ok maybe Drayton Cash & Carry, the mayfair Theatre and Johnny's). After 6pm the whole town just closes! I couldn't believe it. Needless to say, I did carve out a life for myself & my wife. I spent some time instructing at the local college and Adult Ed program, I was on the Sioux Hudson Employment Services Board (eventually became Chair), I did the occasional website & managed to put together Sioux Gamerz - a local PC LAN gaming league and forged some really good friendships. I would like to say thanks to Chris (Drk_Crx) Young and Gary (Billy from Iowa) Meddick for being good friends.

But alas, It's time to move on. I'd like to see the rest of the world. I'd like to try my hand at Philosophy & Theology. I've finally come to a point in my life where I can say "screw you" to my fears and inhibitions. I've spent the last 40 years worried about trying something new - something that may not work - fail. I guess you can say I learnt a thing or two from my parents.

Anyhow, Thanks for everything Sioux Lookout. What on this earth is their selfish problem?

One of these religious leaders at the rally says 'We will not accept this crap'(funny, that's what I say about religion). I know that most of the monotheistic religions are exclusive, narrow minded clubs, but to call the idea of two people marrying 'crap' is just plain nasty. Who said they have to "accept" it anyway?

Another person at the rally says "Gay and lesbian couples just do not have the capacity to physically reproduce," said Pearce Lacey, the retired Catholic Toronto bishop. "Marriage serves the needs of society by producing new citizens and educating them." The last time I checked lesbians are still capable of having children and with all the homeless & starving orphans in the world, I don't think that two men not being able to give birth is an issue.

The article goes on to say "There is no such thing as a right to same-sex marriage," this is said Maurice Vellacott, the Tory MP for Saskatoon-Wanukewin. I disagree. The right that religious people are given is the same right that people (regardless of gender and other labels and stereotypes) have to get married.

This part is what really gets my goat "In the beginning, God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve," read another placard. Hundreds waved "Defend Marriage" signs printed by the Knights of Columbus. First of all, who's beginning? What God are we referring to? Am I to assume that this god that the Knights of Columbus are talking about created a man & a woman? What kind of poppycock is that? This type of belief defies logic. And what the hell does being created have anything to do with marriage? But these people have the "right" to their religious beliefs - and I understand that.

The opponents of same sex marriage need to realize that the world does not exist for them. This world is here for all of us. I think that most of us want to live a happy life, but I'm not sure we can do that when we've got a group of people telling us how we as individuals should live. Besides, if you religious folk think that same-sex marriage is such a big deal, complain to your god - let him deal with these people at the time of judgment (gag).

:)

What a copy cat!

I just read a news article in The Christian Science Monitor - April 6/05 about how Washington is getting closer to the Vatican. Anyone who's been paying attention to the US for the last few years will se that Mr. Bush is increasing his stature by appealing to the "religious fanatics" in his counrty. Look at the steps he took to "help" Terry Shaivo. He, and congress, essentially sidestep civil law in order to help a woman - who by the way hasn't been a woman for 15 years because of her vegitative state. Come on folks, why would we want to keep the shell of a human being alive for 15 years?

Anyhow, this latest ploy from Washington smells like something from the Roman era. Roman Emperor Constantine (anti Christian at the time) had troubles dealing with these "Christians", but in a moment of genious, figured that it you can't beat'em - join'em. By being Christian friendly, just think of the powerbase that this fella would now enjoy (had the Roman Empire not crumbled).

It seems to me that GWB is using a similar tactic. Let's make it look like we're really trying to be friends with this really influential religious organization (cause many of my subjects are indeed members of this club), and see if I can't gain new alliances - new trusts - a larger powerbase - my foot slodiers of god.

I'm getting sick writing this, so I'll let you go.

Peace
/LCR

Musings of the minute

Hey all:

Ever wonder what a myth is? I understand myth to be some old tradition that has some supernatural qualities to it - not to mention half-truths. And what makes something natural? To me, natural is a condition or element of nature. Why am I babbling? I was wondering why christians view the NT as some sort of history. Why don't they see it as myth? The NT, and OT for that matter, is rife with supernatural - (un) natural - events. Yet, millions of people all over the globe believe that the stories contained in the NT are factual. Odd indeed.

On another note...

I was listening to some fella on the radio explaining to the audience how homosexuality was bad, unnatural. I'm not sure what he meant by unnatural, but I assume it has something to do with two men having sex. I'm not sure what the problem is. As long as these men are both consenting and the feelings are mutual, what is the problem? Does god have a problem? Does a myth have a problem about two sentient beings having sexual desire for each other?

/FMF

Saved by ?

When I was in the 5th grade (or there abouts) I used to love Spiderman. Here is a story of a guy who fights against injustices. I was faced with schoolyard bullying - probably cause I was know for my shyness. But I had no fear against these bullies cause Spiderman would set things right! No, really, I realy thought this. I quickly found out that this was not the case - Spiderman did not save the day and I went home with a few black eyes in my day. As I grew older I also realized that Santa Claus (in him Western incarnation) did not exist either. My house had no chimney- so it stood to reason that Santa would not be by on Christmas. He showed up anyway. I guess he used the door.

From the time we are capable of understanding things we are bomarded with fibs, fables, myths, fiction and outright lies. The thing is, that for many of us we still hold a certain attachment to these "untruths". It is within the context of inquiry, proof and reason that we discard our old untruths. What hapens when we don't inquire, demand proof and use reason in our lives?

For the vast majority of mankind, we somehow think that the earth is ours. We can do with it what we please. We can take whatever we need. This falehood is sold to us at a very early age. Most people on the planet believe in god. Many people also believ that this god created the earth and its contents. Many also believe that this god gave man permission to do what he wanted with the earth - "dominion over all the earth" I think is how the OT puts it.

Umong this and other "stories" in the OT and NT and other "religious" writings, mankind is enslaved, belittled, and made to be a thoughtless parasite.

Things must change for the sake of the earth and all of its sentient beings and for the sake of mankind - sometimes I'm not sure if we deserve to continue anyway. Makind must shed away its superstitions & faith in the unproven notion of being saved by something other than ourselves.

Like the song says "only we can make the difference." Tears are not enough

/FMF

The silliness of it all

I was looking at the Genisis (creation story) where god had created man & woman and placed them in a garden that he also created. He told them them they could eat anything in the garden - execpt from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Any idea what this tree would look like? Any idea why Adam and Eve can't have any knowledge of good and evil? God tells them that if they eat from this tree they shall die! Along comes a serpent. Tells Eve of the benefits of eating from this tree - wisdom. The serpent coaxes Eve into eating from the tree - he tells her that she won't die if she eats from the tree. God has to ask if they did anything wrong (I thought he was ALL KNOWING?), once he finds out that they ate from the tree when he forbade it, god get's angry & banishes the two from the garden - BUT they don't die.

Serpent 1 - God 0

/FMF

What a friggn' week

Here is a synopsis of my week (I'm relying on my notes here).
So I get a ligitimate copy of Pandora Tomorrow - install it - only to have the thing not work. It seems that If you install PT on your PC and it detects copy software on your PC (a la Alcohol 120 or Clone CD) it will not work. So a guy has to "crack" his legit copy to get it to work. How screwed-up is that?

Apostasy- To renunciation of one's faith or religion-old testamet political rebel

What is the impetus behind marriage? Is it a socio/economic thing, or is it a thing of the heart? Just curiuos. Is it a religious thing and why? Is it a sacrement? Does anyone really care?

PredudiceDiscriminationPredicate

I think it's really imoportant to teach our children many of life's lesson at a young age. Parents may think they can't understand certain things, that is why it is important to bring things to their level. It is important that we do these things. Teach children about rubbish.

Did you hear that advertising during Super Bowl 2005 went for $77,000 a second! That's absolutley retarded. Do you have any idea how many friggn' people we can feed and clothe on that! A shit-load, that's how many. We live in troubled times my friends.

What is an addict?

When your son or daughter plays any type of oganized team sports, parents have to recognize that their child is part of a team. Parent's who give referees and coaches a hard time because they are treating their kids in a negative way, should think of the team as a whole. If you want to yell at people (your child athlete included), put him/her in an individualized sport - not a team one. Minor hockey has seen its share of ugly incidents, that's why we must adopt a zero tolerance policy for Monor hockey. When things get out of hand - shut the game down. Turn off the lights and tell everone to go home.

Is it a good idea to have segregated schools in Canada? A black school, an Aboriginal school even Chinese school? Hmmm. I'm not sure I like that idea. Proponents for the idea say it helps improve marks for those who are around oters like themselves - amoung other reasons. I think this will set a dangerous precident. Think too, of how it will affect their ability to relate to different aspects of society. I'm not saing that you have to be like everyone else just to participate in society, but if educators think that these (segregated) students have a hard time in a public school - just think of the terror they will feel in a public workforce!

Well I guess the NHL is over for this year. It's about friggn' time! You have a bunch of guys who play a sport (their job). These guys play for an owner. They expect the owner of the team to pay these players millions of dollars to do their jobs - to entertain. What other purpsoe is these to pro hockey? There are people in this word that do a great service to society. People who work for the betterment of humankind - these are the people who should get paid hansomely, not those who entertain. Doctors who heal us - teachers that teach us - police who protect us. However, we must use restraint when paying these people. Those that perform the most complicated duties should be paid very well. Those who perform lesser, but still important duties to society, should still get paid well. Those who entertain need not apply. I see entertainment as an afterthought. Hockey is there to entertain - there is no reason on earth to pay these people this kind of money (in this day and age we see that the NHL is having a hard time sustaining itself). The players complain that the owners make tons of money - that they should be able to pay the players well. If I said that to the company where I work - they'd tell me to find another job if I didn't like it.

Bottom line is that in today's "climate" we shouldn't be paying entertainers (singers, sports players, actors et al) millions of dollars. With all the people that are having a realy tough go of life, we should all start thinking of ourselves as equals - not them and us.

Do canadian farmers make enough money. That's obvious. A large majority of farmers are having a really tough go of things these days. the BSE thing really screwed alot of farmers. cauliflower farmers were getting paid 4 cents a ton not to long ago - that bag of frozen cauliflower still cost you 6 bucks. There is a real problem with the system. The price of ground beef didn't really change much during the BSE thing, but farmers where paid next to nothing for their cows. What's up with that? I know we all have to make money, but this is wrong! It is up to consumers to put the screws to these big companies and try to buy alternatinve products. I know that coffee is a contesious issue when it come to unfair business practices, but we should try and by the fair traded coffee that's out there. I know it costs more , but your not making some multinat really rich - you're helping some guy who gets paid a few bucks a day to pick coffee beans.

If you can help it, try and buy Made in Canada products. if you are having a hard time finding any - ask, no insist, that your reatiler start looing for Canadian made products. We are ultimately responsibe for our economy. Try this great PC game called Immortal Cities: Children of the Nile - to get an idea of what I mean.

Peace.

Beggars can't be choosers

I get this statement from a local Internet service provider. This statement tells me that I owe money. Funny how last month I had to tell this company that I've paid my internet up till March/05. It seems these incompetents just don't get it. Why am I asked to pay for something when I have already paid? Sounds kinda stupid doesn't it? Then I get told that they'll look into it. Great, so I can expect a reply like I got last month "sorry for the error, the necessary corrections have been made". So I guess I should be expecting an invoice next month:( And I'm sure I'll see an outstanding balance from the previous month and interest added to that. Kinda makes me wonder how these businesses have managed to stay afloat (profiting by these "errors" I suppose). I wish there was another internet service provider in my neck of the woods.
