The Racism Card

I used to live in a town that was 50% Aboriginal and 50% non Aboriginal.  The local newspaper, Ontario Provincial Police, and municipal statistics show that 90% of the local crime is perpetrated by the Aboriginal population.  This in itself is not a racist comment.  This is a statistical fact.

There are some people that would like to clean up the town and do something about those that have little or no regard for the law, other people or the town in general.

This is where the Racism card is played.

There are Aboriginals in the town that would see attempts at "cleaning up the town" as a racist gesture, feeling that the target of this "cleaning" is the Aboriginal population of the town.   The statistics don't lie, but I'll admit - they don't tell the entire story either.

Why is it that these two factions cannot work together as cooperative town folk regardless of who is perpetrating crimes or making the town a bad place to live? How about if we work together as Canadians maybe?  I'm being a little pretentious here but it seems so much easier to walk on the crutches of the past than to walk boldly into the future.

Put the racism cards away, I can only play Fish.
