The November 30th McLean's Magazine had an interesting article on "The New Canadian Morality". The title is what got my attention. Since when do morals always stay the same? It might have read "The Changing Canadian Morality".
Many parts of the article interested me, but I was especially intrigued at the Euthanasia section. It seems that it is against the law to give drugs to speed-up death of a terminally ill person, but legal to withdraw feeding tubes from "failing" patients. The question of doctor assisted euthanasia was answered by McQueen's Catholic Bioethics (Catholic bioethics? I guess that's as strange as studying theology). They urge all Canadians to live life well, until its "natural" end (italics by me). Asking Canadians to live well till its natural end? This coming from an organization that fights anything natural and instead formulates their world view on supernatural superstition.
What "The New Canadian Morality" has shown me, is that Canadians are becoming more concerned with rights than with doctrine. I just wish religious folks could understand personal rights.
